Why It Matters What pH Level Your Mouth Is

September 03, 2017

We talked a little bit about one of the benefits of using Activated Charcoal for overall oral health is a heathy pH balance in a previous blog post. Here we will discuss it in more detail.

What Does pH Balance Mean?

pH, or potential hydrogen, has a scale from 1 to 14, with 1 being purely acidic, 14 being purely alkaline and 7 being neutral. Ideally, our pH level would be 7 or slightly above 7. With most things in life, we want to strive to be balanced and a little more on the alkaline side. Don't strive for either extreme!

What Causes You To Be Too Acidic?

Unfortunately, modern society habits tend to be on the acidic side when it comes to our diets, lifestyles, exposure to chemicals, stress, lack of sleep, wrecked gut health, poor immune systems and so on. Studies have shown that low pH levels are associated with many health problems and diseases.

What Does Your Mouth Have To Do With It? And Why Does It Matter What Your pH Level Is?

Your mouth is a part of your body, as well as the pH levels! There is a mouth body connection, where each can affect the other. An acidic mouth can directly affect your immune system and can contribute to diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, respiratory disease and cancer

A weakened immune system can make it hard to prevent and treat gum disease. It becomes a lose lose situation, unless you take control to the best of your ability with an overall healthy routine for your body, including your mouth.

Gum disease is a serious health problem and should be treated as so. You need to think of it as a disease of your body, not just isolated in your mouth because nothing is truly isolated when it comes to your body.

Having a healthy pH balance leads to overall greater health, including oral health.

How To Have A Healthy pH Balance

1. Diet

Eating a diet more on the alkaline side is beneficial and crucial for your health. We eat everyday, multiple times a day, so it matters what you put into your body! Strive for at least an 80/20 rule - 80% being alkaline and 20% being neutral/acidic, but strive to have it closer to neutral. An alkaline diet is rich in vegetables and fruit, preferably non-gmo and organic. For liquids, filtered water is best (actually, natural spring water is better if you can get your hands, err cup, filled with some!). Alcohol and soda are very acidic.

2. Exercise

Exercise should be a daily part of your life. Actually, movement is a better way of thinking. Even if you exercise daily, if you sit on your behind the rest of those 23 hours, it won't benefit you. Incorporate daily, gentle movement into your life. Stay active continuously.

3. Chemical Exposure

To the best of your ability, reduce your exposure to chemicals. It is hard to do this 100% of the time, but you have a lot more control than you realize. Household items, such as cleaning products, candles, scents, detergents, soaps, perfumes, skincare products and more. The environmental working group has great resources to help you know what to avoid.

4. Sleep

We all know sleep is important - they don't call it beauty sleep for nothing! Health is beauty. Getting adequate amounts of sleep is crucial to our health. Lack of sleep weakens our immune systems. We need our immune systems to be in top shape to help us fight off daily invaders, including bad bacteria in our mouths. Strive for 8 hours of sleep.

5. Stress

Oh stress! Don't think emotions can affect your health? Guess again! Many big and small events in life can trigger stress. We all experience it and can't completely avoid unfortunate situations. However, we can control the way we react to it. Stress sets off hormonal and biological reactions inside of us. One of those being a weakened immune system, which makes it harder to fight off infections of all kinds in our body. Everyone is different, so please find a way to manage stress. Whether that is a mantra you repeat daily, listening to soothing music, taking a bath, inhaling appropriate essential oils, calling a friend, playing a sport, yoga, meditation, etc. Find something that brings joy to your life and incorporate it into your daily life in some way.

 6. Practicing Good Oral Health

Practicing a good oral health routine is so important to help keep those pearly whites sparkoaling and to prevent cavities, bad breath, and gum disease. Using Sparkoal Beauty toothpaste and powder helps with whitening your teeth, keeping it at a healthy pH balance, and preventing gum disease. I also suggest flossing and oil pulling at least once daily. (How to oil pull - swish around a spoonful of coconut oil in your mouth daily after you wake up for 10 to 20 minutes. Spit, rinse mouth and then brush. You can also add a few drops of clove essential oil). Also, don't forget to get your teeth professionally cleaned twice a year!
