I noticed a few weeks ago that the skin on my knees was becoming rough and darker. I use a body brush and a body scrub at least a few times a week, so I needed to find another solution to help with this. First off let's learn about what can cause this...
What Causes Dark And Rough Spots On Knees And Elbows?
There are a few things that can cause or contribute to dark and rough spots on your knees and elbows.
Dead skin cells can still absorb light and other time this can cause the spots to darker.
Your body is amazing and does the best it can to protect and heal you. If there is something that is causing friction on your skin, your skin will react by growing extra thick to decrease the damage on your lower layers of the dermis aka skin, which is more sensitive. This rougher skin can also look darker over time.
Dirt particles can build up over time. The dirt particles can be absorbed into the different layers of dead skin cells. It essentially can stain the dead skin cells which will make them look darker. The dead skin cells that grow to protect your skin from friction.
4. Dry Skin
Not having enough (natural) oil on your skin can dry out your skin and leads to a higher cellular decay rate, which means the skin cells die off faster and the dark, rough spots can happen quicker.
5. Other Reasons: medications, hormone imbalances, hyperpigmentation, active melanocytes, etc.
How To Get Rid Of Rough And Dark Spots On Your Knees And Elbows.
There are a few different DIYs I've been trying to help get rid of my dark and rough spots on my elbows and knees. I will share with you my favorite ways that are easy and effective. I also recommend to regularly use a body brush and moisturize your skin, as well as do these natural DIYs.
1. Sugar & Oil Scrub
This DIY is moisturizing and helps exfoliate the skin.
1 Tbsp Sugar
3 Tbsp Oil (I like to use almond, olive oil, and jojoba)
Mix sugar and oil together. Rub the mixture on your elbows and knees in a gentle motion. Let it sit on the skin for 5 to 10 minutes and then wash off. Do this at least a few times a week.
2. Aloe Vera
Aleo Vera is very soothing and moisturizing for your skin. It helps decrease inflammation and can also lighten the skin gently.
Fresh Aloe Vera
Slice off a fresh aloe vera leaf. I cut off the pokey part first and then slice it in half lengthwise to expose the fleshy, sticky flesh. Rub the aloe vera on the dark, rough spots and let it sit for at least 30 minutes and then wash off.
3. Lemon Juice
2 Lemons, sliced in half
Slice each lemon in half. You will use one half for each elbow/knee. Rub the lemon on each knee and elbow for up to a minute. Let the lemon juice soak into your skin for a few hours before washing your skin.
4. Turmeric, Honey & Yogurt
1 tsp turmeric
2 tbsp yogurt
1 tbsp honey
Mix all of the ingredients in a small bowl/container. Rub the mixture on your elbows and knees and let sit for 20 minutes. Before washing it off, rub the mixture some more on your skin.
