How many personal care products do you use everyday? Think about your skin, hair, and teeth.
The skin is your body’s largest organ and it protects you from your surrounding environment. It is your first line of defense against illness and disease, and a passageway to your bloodstream. The skin is porous, and therefore allowing some substances in and out (such as moisture). All of us expose our bodies to toxic chemicals in our everyday lives with the use of cosmetics and personal care products. These chemicals are absorbed transdermal (through the skin) and go into our bodies. Toxic chemicals are also absorbed orally with your dental care routine.
There are 10,500 different chemicals that are allowed into our personal care products. These products are not regulated and the FDA doesn’t require safety testing to be done. Read that again, they are not regulated and the FDA doesn’t require safety testing to be done. Doesn’t that sound wrong? It is wrong because it matters what we use on our bodies. You are what you put in and on your body.
There was a federal law that was created to ensure that our personal care products would be safe, but it has remained pretty much the same since 1938… 1938! So much has changed since then with the chemicals and ingredients used in personal care products. Safecosmetics.org has a great post about what the FDA can and cannot do when it comes to the safety of our personal care products.
What do you do now? It can seem daunting to go through all of your personal care products, but you are worth it. Your health is worth it. 10,500 is a very large number, but there are some ingredients that are higher up on the list of concern than others. Check out this helpful list to get started.
